Tomatoes like women more than men

In a bit of a departure from my normal ramblings on here, firstly I am sorry for not posting sooner but I have spent a considerable amount of time on the floor on my back and well dosed up on pain killers (not that they did any good).  anyway back to the main bit of the post and I bet you are wondering what the heck the title means. Well aren’t you?

If you aren’t then you can stop reading.

Good you are still here, which means you must be at least a little bit interested in this. so here goes

Apparently it is true that Tomatoes prefer women to men, who says so well no other authority than the Royal Horticultural Society who have conducted an experiment at RHS Garden Wisley where they have proven that tomatoes really do prefer women to men.  Well I suppose I ought to be a bit more specific about that statement, in a month long experiment they measured the rate of growth of tomato plants.  And well it turns out that Prince Charles my well be right about talking to your plants but to be really effective it needs to be the ladies who do the talking not the men.

This is from the RHS press release….

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is pleased to announce that it has found its ‘Voice of Wisley’ – the nation’s most plant-friendly voice – following a month long experiment of ‘talking’ to plants. And guess what: plants really do like hearing about themselves from the experts.

Sarah Darwin, whose great-great grandfather was legendary botanist Charles Darwin, one of the founding fathers of the RHS’ Scientific Committee, read a passage from On the Origin of Species. She beat the nine other ‘voices’ to prove she has the x-factor as far tomatoes are concerned. Her plant grew 1.6cm higher than the control plant.

Colin Crosbie, Garden Superintendent and curator for ‘The Voice of Wisley’ experiment at RHS Garden Wisley, said, “There is something wonderfully pleasing about a plant responding to a story about how its kind came into being. We can’t explain exactly what the magical property in Sarah’s voice is, but it could have something to do with the pitch and tone of her voice. Our experiment also found that female voices had the edge over male voices, in helping plants grow.”

The ‘Voice of Wisley’ experiment began in April at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, with open auditions for the public to record excerpts from John Wyndham’s The Day of the Triffids, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream and Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. A variety of voices was then picked to play to 10 tomato plants over a month. Every plant was played a voice through headphones connected to the plant pot, and the conditions for all the plants remained the same throughout the experiment. To ensure the experiment was fair, two control plants were also left to grow in silence.

Sarah Darwin, The Voice of Wisley, said, “I think it is an honour to have a voice that can make tomatoes grow, and especially fitting because for a number of years I have been studying wild tomatoes from the Galapagos Islands at the Natural History Museum in London. I’m not sure if it’s my dulcet tones or the text that I read from On the Origin of Species that made the plant sit up and listen, but either way I think it is great fun and I’m proud of my new title.”

The Voice of Wisley experiment formed part of the RHS’ Grow Your Own
Campaign, which has been running since 2007. In that time the RHS has helped over half a million people to experience the joy of home grown produce. The experiment was designed to introduce people to the idea of growing their own food in a fun and light-hearted way.
